Carolina Vilcapoma is a Peruvian graphic designer, painter, and photographer based in Elsah, Illinois.

Carolina received her graphic design degree from the Art and Design Institute of Peru in 2012.  For 6  years, she worked for different advertising agencies in Lima, Peru. During this time, her work encompassed diverse fields such as branding, high-end retouching, digital illustration, editorial design, product photography, social media, and more.

Drawing and painting have been passions of hers since she was very young. Her interest in art was cultivated during her teenage years and further developed at Principia College. Carolina began her artistic journey at the age of 15 during her training as a graphic designer. Classes such as color theory, visual fundamentals, drawing, illustration, and photography sparked in her a great interest in art, which many years later would inspire her to pursue a BA in studio art at Principia. There, she finally had the opportunity to experiment and fully immerse herself in art, which resulted in a deeper desire to create and explore new ideas and themes. During her time at Principia, her passion for experimentation and creativity has led her to explore a myriad of media, including drawing, oil painting, watercolor, digital illustration, photography, collage, and printmaking. In 2020, a watercolor class by Duncan Martin opened her eyes to all the possibilities that medium has to offer. She was immediately captivated by it and has never stopped using it since.

Her work has been exhibited in the 2020, 2021, and 2022 Principia College’s  annual juried shows. In 2021, she received the James L.Green Merit Scholarship for the arts. This spring, she was accepted to be part of an immersive art trip to New York, where she had the opportunity to visit for the first time museums like The Guggenheim, The Met, Moma, PS1, and to see for the first time the work of some of the artists that have significantly influenced her art practice such as Wassily Kandinsky, David Hockney, Georgia O’keeffe, Helen Frankenthaler, George Baselitz, and more. Carolina’s love and commitment to art has grown immensely since this trip and the influence of this experience can be seen in her new work. Currently, Carolina works as a graphic designer and photographer for the Marketing and Admissions departments at Principia College. She will graduate with a BA in studio art from Principia College in December 2022, and she hopes to further her education within the art field and attend graduate school in the near future to obtain an MFA.
